WHAT MAKES US DIFFERENT

We make our products the old-fashioned way. This means that what use special techniques that produce impeccably finished products. They take a lot of time and patience but like all finely crafted goods, the result it absolutely worth it.

This is how we do it…

WE CUT TO A THREAD

Instead of cutting along a ruler or a ruled line, we cut to a thread. Firstly we define our measurements. We choose the thread closest to the measurement and we give the thread a gentle little tug. This straightens the thread and allows us to see it better in the fabric. Then, using tailor’s shears, we cut alongside the now visible thread. This method creates a perfectly straight cut edge.

WE FOLD TO A THREAD

We then measure the hem width and instead of pressing along a line made by measuring, we fold the hem along a thread. Again, we choose the thread closest to the hem width and then create a fold by following that thread all the way along the edge. This requires very good eyesight and a delicate pinching motion but it creates a perfect hem edge. As it is a rolled hem, we make two of these folds on each side.

WE SEW TO A THREAD

Finally, while sewing along the hem edge, we precisely sew adjacent to the thread that runs along the edge of the fold.

The result is a hem that follows the natural weft of the cloth, that is in relation to the structure of the cloth, absolutely straight. This hem will not distort as it is laundered over and over again. It will retain a natural shape. And as the seam does not twist and contort, it will have greater longevity.

CREATING HEIRLOOMS

AT THE HEART OF WHAT WE DO

There is a deep satisfaction within all of us who work here at the Atelier for getting our work right. For working really hard, practicing over and over, and learning and refining until we become an expert at that thing. This is what drives us. We are dedicated to producing exceptional, expertly made textile items that we hope will one day, become modern day heirlooms.

MADE IN FRANCE

Flax fields surround our tiny village in the summer and the tradition and expertise of turning it into fabric lays all around our region in the form of combing and carding workshops, spinners and weaving mills. Being here has bought a new dimension to our work and how we honour the tradition of making linen.

FABRIC SAMPLES

GET A FEEL FOR THE FABRIC

Our fabric sample card includes both of our colourways.

Did you know that the conditions during the flax growing season affect the final colour of the flax and in turn, the final colour of the linen? Batches from different years can have slightly different colours. The samples we send are cut from the current batch, so you know exactly what your linen will look like.
